How to Add Music to a Roblox Game

Updated

Audio defines the emotional atmosphere of your game — from tranquil village themes to adrenaline-pumping boss music. Here is how to upload your music tracks, add Sound objects, and write clean Luau scripts to play background music seamlessly.

Step 1: Prepare and Upload Audio

Export your audio as a high-fidelity WAV, MP3, or OGG file. For seamless looping without jarring clicks, make sure the track duration ends cleanly on a measure downbeat. You can create royalty-free 8-bit chiptune loops or full instrumental tracks using the 8-Bit Music Generator.

  1. 1 Go to create.roblox.com and open the Creator Dashboard.
  2. 2 Click Development Items → Audio.
  3. 3 Click Upload Asset, select your audio file, and name it.
  4. 4 Every Roblox creator receives 100 free audio uploads per month (2,000 for ID-verified accounts).
  5. 5 Once uploaded, copy the numeric Audio Asset ID.

Step 2: Add a Sound Object in Studio

To play global background music across the entire game:

  1. 1 In the Explorer window in Roblox Studio, locate SoundService.
  2. 2 Click the + icon beside SoundService and insert a Sound object. Rename it to `BackgroundMusic`.
  3. 3 In the Properties panel, set `SoundId` to `rbxassetid://YOUR_AUDIO_ID`.
  4. 4 Check the Looped property so the music automatically repeats when it reaches the end.
  5. 5 Check Playing if you want the track to play immediately when the server boots.
  6. 6 Adjust `Volume` (0.3 to 0.5 is ideal for ambient BGM so it does not drown out sound effects).

Step 3: Control Music Dynamically with a Script

To change music when players enter new zones (e.g. entering a combat arena or cave), place this LocalScript inside StarterPlayerScripts:

local SoundService = game:GetService("SoundService")
local bgm = SoundService:WaitForChild("BackgroundMusic")

-- Smoothly fade in background music
bgm.Volume = 0
bgm:Play()

local TweenService = game:GetService("TweenService")
local fadeIn = TweenService:Create(bgm, TweenInfo.new(2), { Volume = 0.5 })
fadeIn:Play()
