How to Make a Decal on Roblox
Updated
Decals are 2D images applied to faces of 3D parts in Roblox Studio — perfect for graffiti, custom signs, posters, crosshairs, and UI icons. Here is how to prepare a high-resolution transparent decal, upload it, and use it in your game.
Step 1: Create the Decal Image
Decals look best as PNG images with transparent backgrounds. While Roblox scales images up to 1024×1024 pixels, square dimensions such as 512×512 or 1024×1024 ensure sharp textures without distortion. You can generate custom game textures using the Game Texture Maker or craft crisp icon badges with the Roblox Game Icon Maker.
Step 2: Upload the Decal to Roblox
- 1 Go to create.roblox.com and open the Creator Dashboard.
- 2 Click Development Items in the left menu and select Decals.
- 3 Click Upload Asset, choose your PNG file, and give your decal a title and description.
- 4 Click Upload. Creating and uploading decals is completely free and costs zero Robux.
Once submitted, Roblox moderation reviews the image before it becomes publicly visible. If your image contains text or symbols that trigger safety filters, it will appear as a gray placeholder box until approved.
Step 3: Apply the Decal in Roblox Studio
To place your decal onto a 3D block or wall in Roblox Studio:
- 1 Open your experience in Roblox Studio and select the target Part in the Explorer window.
- 2 Click the + icon beside the Part and insert a Decal object.
- 3 Select the Decal object in the Explorer, look at the Properties panel, and find the Texture property.
- 4 Paste your decal asset ID or select it from your Toolbox inventory under My Decals.
- 5 Change the Face property (Front, Back, Top, Bottom, Left, Right) to position the image onto the desired side of the part.
Unlike regular Part colors, Decals support full alpha transparency, allowing transparent logo borders to blend cleanly against brick, concrete, and wood materials.
Roblox Decal FAQ
Is it free to make a decal on Roblox?
Yes. Uploading decals to Roblox is 100% free and does not cost Robux.
What is the maximum resolution for a Roblox decal?
Roblox accepts images up to 1024×1024 pixels. Larger images will be automatically downscaled to 1024×1024 upon upload.
What is the difference between a Decal and a Texture?
A Decal stretches a single image across the selected face of a part. A Texture repeats (tiles) across the surface based on the StudsPerTile properties, making it ideal for brick walls and tiled floors.
Why is my decal invisible or gray?
Newly uploaded decals are checked by Roblox automated moderation. Until approved, the image appears as a gray placeholder. Ensure your image conforms to Roblox Community Standards.
