How to Insert FBX into Roblox Studio
Updated
Roblox Studio allows creators to import custom 3D models made in Blender, Maya, or generated via AI. The Unified 3D Mesh Importer supports FBX, glTF, and OBJ files with embedded textures and skeletal rigs. Here is how to import your 3D assets properly.
Step 1: Model Preparation and Polygon Budget
Before importing, ensure your model meets Roblox mesh specifications:
- Polycount Limit: Standard MeshParts support up to 20,000 triangles. Complex models exceeding 20,000 triangles must be split into multiple sub-meshes.
- Scale & Pivot: Apply all transforms in Blender (Ctrl+A -> Apply All Transforms) and position the pivot point at the base of the mesh.
- Units: Set your modeling software units to meters or studs to avoid microscopic or gargantuan model imports.
Generate game-ready 3D FBX models with automated topology using our Image to 3D Model Generator.
Step 2: Use the Unified 3D Importer in Studio
- 1 Open your experience in Roblox Studio.
- 2 In the top ribbon bar, click the Home or Avatar tab and select 3D Importer.
- 3 Browse to your `.fbx` or `.gltf` file and click Open.
- 4 In the 3D Importer preview dialog, inspect your mesh geometry, material textures, and collision preview.
- 5 Ensure Import Materials is checked to automatically import diffuse, normal, and roughness maps.
- 6 Click Import to upload the mesh to your cloud inventory and insert it directly into your Workspace.
Step 3: Configure Collision and Physics
Select your imported MeshPart in the Explorer and inspect the Properties panel:
- CollisionFidelity: Set to Default for simple props, Hull for vehicles, or PreciseConvexDecomposition for intricate buildings and doorways that characters need to walk through.
- Anchored: Check Anchored if the object is static environment scenery that should not fall or move when bumped by characters.
- CastShadow: Toggle off for small decorative foliage or tiny props to optimize mobile rendering performance.
Roblox FBX Import FAQ
What is the maximum triangle count for a Roblox FBX?
Roblox allows up to 20,000 triangles per individual MeshPart. Larger objects should be broken into separate sub-meshes.
Why did my FBX import without textures?
Ensure your textures are saved in the same directory as the FBX file before importing, or upload the textures as Decals/SurfaceAppearances manually.
Can I import FBX models with skeletal animations?
Yes. The 3D Importer supports skeletal meshes and animation tracks exported from Blender or Maya.
